Wayne Rooney won the PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday and later vowed to be fit for the World Cup this summer.
The Manchester United striker lately recovered from an ankle injury, only to pick up a groin strain in training which may force him to miss the rest of the season.
This will have been a worry for Fabio Capello, but the England striker has declared that he is targeting United’s final game of the season on 9th May as a possible date for his comeback.
“The groin will be fine for the World Cup, there are no worries about that,” he said.
“I’m hoping to play for United in the last game of the season.”
The main target for Rooney may well be 12th June, as this is the date of England’s first game of the World Cup against the US of A.
England are 4/7 Full Time Result with USA 5/1 and the draw 14/5.
Rooney is the English Premier League’s top scorer with 26 goals, and has been stunning all season scoring 34 times in total for Man United and eight for England, to make him a major part of the England team.
“It’s a great feeling to win the player of the year award because it’s voted for by the players,” said Rooney.
“It’s something I’m really proud of and it’s a great honour.”
Another Englishman won the PFA Young Player of the Year with Aston Villa’s James Milner scooping the prize.
Milner has forced his way into Capello’s plans this season with his brilliant form, and the 24-year-old credited a change in position for his recent improvements.
“I’ve been moved into the middle and that suits me as it helps me influence the game a bit more,” said Milner.
“Maybe sometimes wide right you want to influence the game but you just can’t get yourself into it.”
Rooney is currently the leading Premier League goalscorer and can be backed at 10/1 to be the Leading Goalscorer at the World Cup 2010.
England are 6/1 to win the World Cup 2010.
