Premiership Predictions: April 9th to 11th: (Saturday to Monday) 2011

Match 1: Wolves – Everton: (Saturday April 9th: 12.45pm):

Wolves mini unbeaten run came to an end last Saturday when they went down 4-1 at Newcastle. They are still in the bottom three in 19th place but only one point from safety. A win in this game could see them move out of the bottom three as very few points as only three points separate Wigan in 20th place to Blackburn in 14th.

Wolves home record is not bad with wins against Stoke, Birmingham, Manchester City, Manchester United, Blackpool, Sunderland and Chelsea. They have also drawn against Spurs, West Ham and Newcastle. The 5 defeats have come against Bolton, Liverpool, Arsenal, Wigan and Aston Villa. So not a bad home record against an Everton side who have a good away record mainly because of a large amount of draws they have recorded. Everton have slowly improved since the new year and are now 7th in the table. I suspect they have left it too late to qualify for Europe but never the less they are in form which means that Wolves will have to play well to win this game.

Last time out at Home Wolves drew 3-3 with Spurs thanks to a late goal. A bore draw in this game would not be good for Wolves as it could leave them with more work to do in their bid to stay up for a second successive season.

Everton’s list of draws away have come at West Ham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Blackpool, Sunderland, Fulham and Spurs. The wins have come at Manchester City, Birmingham and Newcastle. On the other side of the coin they have lost at Stoke, Aston Villa, Blackburn, Bolton and Arsenal.

I think that Wolves will just sneak a win in this game but it will be a close game.

Match prediction: Wolves to win
Correct Score prediction: Wolves 2 Everton 1
Attendance prediction: 28,000

Match 2: Blackburn – Birmingham: (Saturday April 9th: 3pm):

Blackburn managed a great 0-0 draw at Arsenal last Saturday which helped them in their relegation fight and also I suspect gave them some much needed confidence in their battle to avoid the drop. They are now 14th but only two point above the drop zone. I think they will survive but it might be a bit nerve racking for their supporters.

Thankfully for Blackburn they have an ok home record with wins against Liverpool, Everton, Aston Villa, Wolves, West Brom and Wigan while they have drawn with Fulham, Blackpoll (Last home game), Newcastle, Sunderland and West Ham. The defeats have come against Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Stoke. Not as good a home record as last season and hence why they are lower down the table then last term.

Birmingham won a vital game against Bolton last Saturday as I predicted and this result moved them out of the bottom three to 15th place. It was also revenge for Birmingham as they had lost at home to Bolton in the quarter finals of the FA Cup only a few weeks before hand.

Birmingham have only won two away games this season at Blackpool and West Ham, both of these wins have come in the second half of the season. Last time out away Blues lost 2-1 at bottom placed Wigan which it goes without saying was a bad result for them. Blues have drawn away a few times at Everton, Manchester City, Sunderland, Bolton, Aston Villa and Fulham but have lost at Manchester United, Wigan, Arsenal, Wolves, West Brom and Stoke. A mixed bag really and it is their away form that has generally let them down this season with the large amount of draws.

A home win but I think that come the end of the season both sides will survive.

Match prediction: A home win
Correct Score prediction: Blackburn 2 Birmingham 0
Attendance prediction: 24,000

Match 3: Bolton – West Ham: (Saturday April 9th: 3pm):

Bolton’s bad away run (apart from the FA Cup) continued last Saturday when they lost again, this time at relegation threatened Birmingham City. It was Bolton’s 9th away defeat of the season. However, at home Bolton have been a different beast with 8 wins and only two defeats to Liverpool and Chelsea. The eight wins have come against Everton, Newcastle, Wolves, West Brom, Stoke, Spurs, Blackburn and last time out at home 3-2 against struggling Aston Villa. Bolton are also into the FA Cup semi finals and play Stoke City at Wembley the week after this. It will be a game that will give Bolton a chance of reaching their first FA Cup final since they beat Manchester United 2-0 in the 1958 final (I think?).

West Ham come to Bolton with a relegation away record but they did manage a draw at Spurs in their last away game in a 0-0 scoreline. They failed to build on that good result however, when they threw away a 2-0 half time lead to lose 4-2 at home last Saturday to Manchester United. That result dumped them back into the relegation places again.

West Ham have managed only two away wins this season at Fulham and Blackpool but have drawn seven times at Blackburn, Everton, Wolves, Stoke, Birmingham, West Brom and of course Spurs in their last away game. The defeats have come at Liverpool, Arsenal, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Manchester United. If only West ham could have turned a few of their draws into wins then they would be out of the bottom three.

As West Ham had such a bad result last weekend and Bolton are so strong at home I think that Bolton will win and no I don’t think that West Ham are going to stay up.

Match prediction: a home win
Correct Score prediction: Bolton 3 West Ham 1
Attendance prediction: 25,000

Match 4: Chelsea – Wigan: (Saturday April 9th: 3pm):

Chelsea had a bad result on Wednesday when they lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final. Can’t see Chelsea winning the second leg and going through which means that Chelsea are set to win nothing this season after claiming the double last year.

Chelsea are more or less out of the Premiership title race as well after dropping two points at Stoke last Saturday which leaves them in 4th place some 11 points adrift of leaders Manchester United. Yes they have a game in hand but I feel that at this stage of the season it is too big a gap to bridge for Chelsea.

Chelsea should however qualify for the Champions league for next season which at one point this season was something they might not achieve. They have a 5 point lead over Spurs who are fading fast. The game between the two sides at Stamford Bridge before the season ends will I suspect confirm their 4th place finish. Chelsea have a good home record with only 2 league defeats to Sunderland and Liverpool and 2 draws against Everton and Aston Villa. The wins total at home stands at 10 which is up their with the best this season. It is away where they have dropped too many points.

Wigan come to Chelsea with a record of just two wins and six defeats which helps explain why they are bottom of the table and heading for the Championship. The two wins cam at Spurs and Wolves.

I really can’t see Wigan winning this game or even drawing, so a home win and further confirmation if any needed that Wigan will be relegated.

Match prediction: Chelsea to win
Correct Score prediction: Chelsea 3 Wigan 0
Attendance prediction: 41,000

Match 5: Manchester United – Fulham: (Saturday April 9th: 3pm):

United are more or less their in terms of winning the title that they lost to Chelsea last season. Last Saturday they came from 2-0 down at half time away at West Ham to win 4-2. Never mind that the penalty to put them in the lead was a bit harsh as they would have won anyway. With Arsenal failing to win again in a 0-0 draw against Blackburn, United have taken a seven point lead at the top. This will be enough I think for them to win the title as Arsenal can’t win to save their lives and United are on fire.

United also had a great result in the week when they won 1-0 at Chelsea in the quarter finals of the Champions League. I think they will finish the job at home in the second leg. They are also in the FA Cup semi finals against Manchester City and it is looking more and more like 1999 for United.

United have the best home record in the Premiership with 14 wins and only the draw against West Brom out of 15 games. It is this impressive home record that has enabled United to stay top despite a below average away record (for them).

Fulham now arrive at Old Trafford with a good away record mainly down to the large amount of draws they have recorded on their travels this season., eight in total. They have only won one game away at Stoke but the eight draws have come at Blackburn, Blackpool, West Ham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Wigan, Bolton and impressively Manchester City. Last Sunday they beat Blackpool 3-0 at home to move upto 10th place in the table. In their last away game they lost 2-1 at Everton, which was their 6th away defeat.

I really can’t see Fulham gaining a draw or heaven forbid a win in this game despite the fact that United struggled to beat Bolton in their last game 1-0 at with a very late goal. An easy home win for United then and another three points towards the title.

Match prediction: A home win
Correct Score prediction: Manchester United 2 Fulham 0
Attendance prediction: 73,000

Match 6: Sunderland – West Brom: (Saturday April 9th: 3pm):

Sunderland were thrashed 5-0 at Manchester City last Sunday and they have now gone 7 games without a win since beating Blackpool away in late January. This run of form has coincided with the departure of Darren Bent so it is not hard to see where the problem lies for them. In fact they have failed to score in their last 4 games and have only gained one point in this 7 game run which was a 0-0 draw at Arsenal which says more about Arsenal’s season then it does Sunderland’s.

Sunderland have a good home record but they have started losing at home recently after going the first half of the season unbeaten at home. They have now lost 4 times at home since Christmas to Blackpool, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea. The wins this season at home have come against Aston Villa, West Ham, Blackburn, Manchester City, Bolton and Stoke. No home win since they beat Blackburn over the holiday period. Can’t see them winning this game either as West Brom have improved greatly since Roy Hodgson took over.

West Brom are beginning to look like they will stay up after they came from behind to beat Liverpool at home last Saturday. They have now moved upto 13th, some 4 points ahead of the bottom three. They still have some work to do but I think they are going to make it. In West Brom’s last away game they had a great 3-1 at Birmingham which was only their 3rd away win this season but a very timely one. Their other wins were at Arsenal and Everton while they have drawn at West Ham, Stoke and somehow Manchester United earlier in the season when they were 2-0 down at half time. In fact they are the only side to take points off Manchester United at home.

I think that both sides will cancel each other out. The point will be useful for West Brom but for Sunderland it will a most unwelcome addition to their winless run.

Match prediction: A draw
Correct Score prediction: Sunderland 1 West Brom 1
Attendance prediction: 36,000

Match 7: Spurs – Stoke: (Saturday April 9th: 3pm):

Spurs had a dreadful result on Tuesday night in the Champions League when they went down 4-0 to Real Madrid with some massive help from the referee. He decided to send their top striker off in the first half when the score was only 1-0 for a foul that looked to me pretty harmless. Funny that Arsenal had their striker sent off against Barcelona for an even more stupid reason as well as two English clubs meeting at the quarter final stage and you could believe to wonder that UEFA does not like English clubs? No way, UEFA are as decent and fair as FIFA. They are both the same, i.e., corrupt and evil…

Spurs will never go through in the second leg so they need to somehow recover and beat Stoke or they will fail to get back into the Champions league for next season as they are 5 points adrift of Chelsea in 5th place. Spurs have now gone 4 games in the league without a win (6 if you include Europe). They have not won since the 2-1 win at Sunderland on the 12th February. Thankfully for them Chelsea dropped two points last Saturday which of course helped them.

Spurs now play a Stoke side who are happier as they are in the FA Cup semi finals and happily safe in midtable well away from the relegation dog fight at the bottom of the table. Stoke have a good home record but a poor away one. They have lost 11 times already this season away having only recorded 3 wins at Newcastle, Blackburn and West Brom.

Spurs have a good home record with 7 wins six draws and only the one defeat to Wigan against their name. Because of this I think that even though Spurs will struggle in this game because of confidence being low they will win a close game.

Match prediction: A Spurs win
Correct Score prediction: Spurs 2 Stoke 1
Attendance prediction: 36,000

Match 8: Blackpool – Arsenal: (Sunday April 10th: 1.30pm):

Arsenal have more or less blown their title chances after failing to beat lowly Blackburn at home last Saturday in a 0-0 draw. The gunners have now gone 3 league games without a win and six overall which has seen them get knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona, beaten 2-1 by Birmingham in the League cup final and knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United. The three league games they have failed to win have all ended in draws and you have to ask has any club been on a more deflating run in recent years?

Arsenal are now 7 points behind Manchester United in second place with a game in hand and the way they are playing it is I suspect a gap too big for them to bridge in the title race. They now take to Blackpool the best away record in the League as they have won seven and drawn five while only losing two at Chelsea and Manchester United. The seven wins have come at Birmingham, West Ham, Wolves, Blackburn, Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa. Last time out away Arsenal came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at West Brom.

Blackpool lost again on Sunday, this time 3-0 at Fulham and are now staring relegation in the face as they are in 17th place just one point above the drop zone. After a great first half to the season It is looking like Blackpool are going to do what Burnley did last season and get relegated after a good first half of the season. That would be a shame for the club and their fans.

Blackpool have an average home record with wins against Spurs, Liverpool, Wolves, West Brom and draws against Everton, Fulham, Aston Villa while losing to Sunderland, Birmingham, West Ham, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Blackburn. More games lost at home than won.

I think that as Blackpool are on a bad run and that Arsenal have to win sooner or later than Arsenal will prevail and come away with a win but I suspect that it will be a close game.

Match prediction: Arsenal to win
Correct Score prediction: Blackpool 1 Arsenal 2
Attendance prediction: 17,000

Match 9: Aston Villa – Newcastle: (Sunday April 10th: 4pm):

Aston Villa grabbed a much needed point at Everton last Saturday when they drew 2-2. It still leaves Villa in trouble at the bottom of the table though as they are in 16th place just two points above safety. Villa now play Newcastle at home in a game they have to win to put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three. Villa lost their last home game 1-0 to Wolves which was a crap result. Villa have now lost 4 times at home this season, the other defeats coming against Arsenal, Sunderland and Spurs. They have however managed to beat West Ham, West Brom, Blackburn, Manchester City, Everton and Blackpool while drawing with Fulham, Birmingham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Bolton. Not a bad home record then but undermined by their away form where they have only managed two wins.

Newcastle are safely in midtable after their 4-1 win over relegation threatened Wolves last Saturday. Newcastle have a average away record. They have won at Everton, West Ham, Wigan , Birmingham and Arsenal but lost at West Brom, Fulham, Manchester United, Manchester City, Spurs, Bolton and Stoke which was their last away game when they were hammered 4-0. To even things out they have managed draws at Sunderland, Blackburn and Wolves.

I think that Villa will win this game, just but it will be a much needed win for Villa. The big question is if the win will keep the locals happy as they are pissed off with their manager. I don’t think so and if I was in charge at Villa I would be seriously looking at Changing the manager in the summer.

Match prediction: A home win
Correct Score prediction: Aston Villa 2 Newcastle 1
Attendance Prediction: 36,000

Match 10: Liverpool – Manchester City: (Monday April 11th: 8pm):

City bounced back from their defeat to Chelsea by thrashing luckless Sunderland 5-0 at home last Sunday which took them above Chelsea into third place, one point above Chelsea who of course could only draw at Stoke on the Saturday. City are also through to the FA Cup semi finals where they play their bitter city rivals United at Wembley.

City drew this fixture last season 2-2 and have beaten Liverpool at home 3-0 already this season so Liverpool will be hoping for some revenge in this game. They might have trouble getting it. Liverpool have a good home record as apposed to their dreadful away form where they have lost 10 times already, the latest being last Saturday when they lost 2-1 at West Brom despite taking the lead. At home Liverpool have only lost twice to Blackpool and Wolves. They have drawn with Arsenal, Everton, Sunderland and Wigan but on the plus side they have won nine. The nine wins have come against Manchester United, Chelsea, Bolton, Blackburn, Stoke, Aston Villa, West Ham, West Brom and Fulham. Under Dalglish Liverpool have not lost at home and as City’s away form has dipped a bit in the last few games I think they will both cancel each other out in this game.

City have a good away record with 6 wins but they have lost five times and three of those defeats have come recently at Aston Villa, Manchester United and Chelsea. The other two defeats came earlier in the season at Sunderland and Wolves. The six wins for the record have come at Wigan, Blackpool, Newcastle, West Ham, Fulham and West Brom.

I think that both sides will cancel each other out and for city they should be playing in the Champions League next season which should piss off Liverpool fans as they think they should be doing just that.

Match prediction: A draw
Correct Score prediction: Liverpool 2 Manchester City 2
Attendance Prediction: 44,000

Premiership Tips & Correct Scores for Weekend August 28th/29th 2010

Hello everyone. How are you all? An improvement last weekend with 5 correct results out of 10 compared to 4 the first weekend. I correctly predicted Arsenal beating Blackpool, Manchester City beating Liverpool, Bolton winning at West Ham, Chelsea beating Wigan & Birmingham beating Blackburn. Hopefully I can improve further this week to get my average back up to last seasons 57%. A word about poor Blackpool. They were wrongly penalised for Arsenal’s second goal & the sending off which meant they were 2-0 down with only ten men on the field. This was very unfair but the media all said that it was the harshness of life in the Premiership & the gap in class which caused them to lose 6-0. Right, so that means you have to play with 10 men for over 60 minutes & have a stupid penalty awarded against you so that the media can come out with it’s headlines. That’s fair isn’t it? Thank you for the comments some of you have been leaving on the website. I do read them all so thanks. Onwards & upwards. Good luck for this weekend & see you all next week.

Match 1: Blackburn – Arsenal: (Saturday August 28th: 12.45pm):

Arsenal had a good home win last weekend in beating Blackpool 6-0. They were massively helped by the referee who awarded a penalty that wasn’t & the sending off which meant that Blackpool had to play with 10 men for most of the game. Arsenal now play a Blackburn side who won their opening home against Everton but lost 2-1 at Birmingham last Saturday after taking the lead early in the second half. They also missed a penalty when the score was 0-0. They will see the defeat as a missed chance to improve their bad away form. Last season they beat Arsenal at home at the end of the season but lost 6-2 away. Arsenal tend to have trouble in this fixture mainly because of the style of play that Blackburn play in that have trouble dealing with it. This could be a really tough game for them but I think they will win, just. I still think that Blackburn will easily stay up because of their home form & that Arsenal won’t win the title. Arsenal will probably come third behind Chelsea & Manchester United. One thing is for sure, they will finish higher in the league than Liverpool. A close away win then & Arsenal might have to come from behind to gain victory.

Result Prediction: Arsenal to win
Score Prediction: Blackburn 1 Arsenal 2
Attendance Prediction: 24,000

Match 2: Blackpool – Fulham: (Saturday August 28th: 3pm):

Blackpool were brought back down to earth after their 4-0 win at Wigan on the opening day by losing 6-0 at Arsenal. As I have mentioned elsewhere they were not helped by the referee. We will never know how they the result will have turned out if the sending off & penalty hadn’t have happened. They now need to re group & focus on the home game with Fulham which is of course their first home game since promotion. Fulham played very well to draw with Manchester United 2-2 last Sunday. They were 2-1 down late in the second half & after United missed a penalty managed to grab a late goal themselves. That surprised me as United usually go onto win games when they score late on. That makes it two draws so far for Fulham. They will be well aware that they lost 2-1 to Hull when they made their home debut in the premiership two seasons ago, so they will be hoping that history does not repeat. I can see Blackpool winning but it will be close. Fulham have a bad away record but of course did manage a 0-0 draw at Bolton on the opening day. Could be a close game with Blackpool just sneaking it. Still don’t think that Blackpool will stay up but Fulham will as was backed up by their draw last Sunday.

Result Prediction: Blackpool to win
Score Prediction: Blackpool 2 Fulham 1
Attendance Prediction: 18,000

Match 3: Chelsea – Stoke City: (Saturday August 28th: 3pm):

Chelsea won 6-0 for the second game on the trot this time at the expense of a Wigan side who are looking like it is going to be a very hard job to stay up. They now face Stoke at home who lost 2-1 at home to Spurs last Saturday. This means that they are bottom of the table above Wigan on Goal difference. Last season they lost 7-0 in this fixture. Stoke will not be looking forward to this game as a consequence. Can’t really see them getting anything out of this game. The way Chelsea are playing at home since they lost to Manchester City last season has been very impressive. If I was a Stoke fan I wouldn’t bother going to the game, mainly because of the cost of admission. Chelsea are of course top of the table but I still stand by my prediction of them finishing second to Manchester United in the title race. Good if only we could go back to the old days where the likes of Aston Villa (1981), Notts Forest (1978), Leeds United (1992) won the title. The title race has become so bloody boring but of course the media will tell you otherwise. Close games my arse….A home win then and not a brave prediction by any stretch of the imagination.

Result Prediction: Chelsea to win
Score Prediction: Chelsea 4 Stoke 0
Attendance Prediction: 41,000

Match 4: Spurs – Wigan: (Saturday August 28th: 3pm):

Another Easy game to predict & I thought the Premiership was so competitive. Wigan are bottom after losing 4-0 to Wigan & last Saturday 6-0 to Chelsea. Wigan’s players don’t appear to be playing with any passion or care. Welcome to the Premiership where a lot of players seem to be content to pick up their insane wage packets & not give a toss. Last season to prove the point they lost 9-1 in this fixture. Again I would recommend that Wigan fans don’t bother spending stupid money on going to this game. The sooner the better that Clubs reduce their prices. Don’t hold your breath. Spurs won 4-0 in midweek to qualify for the Champions League group stages. They also had a very good win at Stoke last Saturday but should have only come away with a draw after a Stoke goal was not given after crossing the line late on in the game. Spurs have started well this season & I really can’t see them losing this game. Another home win then & it is only a matter of how many goals they will score.

Result Prediction: Spurs to win
Score Prediction: Spurs 3 Wigan 0
Attendance Prediction: 35,000

Match 5: Wolves – Newcastle: (Saturday August 28th: 3pm):

Wolves have started the season well. They followed up their 2-1 win against Stoke by drawing at Everton 1-1. They have a tough fixture this Saturday as they face a Newcastle side who recovered well from losing at Manchester United to thrash Aston Villa 6-0. How they managed that I still can’t work out. Anyway, Wolves away should be a difficult game for them & I can see them winning. Wolves as I have said previously should stay up but Newcastle’s season is anybody’s guess? Shouldn’t go down after the 6-0 win on Sunday that’s for sure. I reckon that Newcastle will win this game. Wolves may not concede many goals but they don’t score many either. They had an average home form last season but did manage to beat Spurs, Bolton, Burnley (didn’t everyone), Fulham & Sunderland. They managed to lose to Portsmouth!!! A new castle win then & I am sure that all the Championship clubs are missing them being in the Championship with their large following. I’m sure Sunderland fans feel the same, not.

Result Prediction: Newcastle to win
Score Prediction: Wolves 1 Newcastle 3
Attendance Prediction: 27,000

Match 6: Manchester United – West Ham: (Saturday August 28th: 5.30pm):

Manchester United will be unhappy that they blew three points by only drawing at Fulham after they were winning two one late on & missed a penalty to draw 2-2. They did however thrash Newcastle 3-0 on the opening weekend & will be hoping for a similar result against a West Ham side who have lost both their games. They lost 3-1 at home to Bolton on Saturday (as I predicted). They also missed a penalty, this time when the score was 0-0. That Penalty miss proved to be costly but it could be even more costly in context of the season as If they had scored that Penalty & gone onto to win the game then they would have had an early launch pad for their season. They are now bottom with Wigan & Stoke. Last season they lost this fixture 3-0 & there will probably be a repeat of that scoreline in this game. West Ham are going to struggle this season & their manager could see himself taking down to clubs to the premiership in consecutive seasons after managing Portsmouth last season. An easy three points then for Manchester United & again who says there are only easy games in the Premiership, err, me.

Result Prediction: Manchester United to win
Score Prediction: Manchester United 4 West Ham 1
Attendance Prediction: 75,000

Match 7: Aston Villa – Everton: (Sunday August 29th: 4pm):

Villa have had a dreadful week. They lost 6-0 at Newcastle last Sunday & were then knocked out of Europe by Austria Vienna 3-2 after leading 2-1 with ten minutes left. Not good. To say they are missing Martin O’Neil is an Understatement. It will now be proved that the chairman has made a massive mistake in forcing him to leave by trying to see their players. They now face an Everton side who haven’t had a good start either. They lost on the opening day at Blackburn 1-0 & then could only draw at home with Wolves 1-1. Both sides need a win & badly. I think Everton will win this game as Villa’s morale is worse than Everton. I remember when both these sides contested the League cup final of 1977 & Villa won 3-2 in the third game as the first two games had finished 0-0 (at Wembley) & 1-1. Enough of the retro, on with the prediction you say. Could be a good game this one as both sides are making mistakes in defence, anyway a Everton win & very unhappy times at the Villa, not that Birmingham City fans will care.

Result Prediction: Everton to win
Score Prediction: Aston Villa 1 Everton 2
Attendance Prediction: 35,000

Match 8: Bolton – Birmingham: (Sunday August 29th: 1.30pm):

This is a difficult to predict as both sides have started well. Birmingham followed up their 2-2 draw at Sunderland on the opening day to beat Blackburn 2-1 at home (as I predicted) & then beat Rochdale 3-2 in the League cup. Bolton had a great 3-1 at West Ham last Saturday to go to four points after their opening day 0-0 draw with Fulham. Can see this game ending a draw but I am going to stick my neck out & say that Bolton should just shade a close game as I think that Birmingham’s away record is not that good despite their 2-2 draw at Sunderland when they came from 2-0 down, all be it against 10 men. This time they will be playing 11 men & it could catch them out. Bolton are improving under Owen Coyle which was proved by their excellent 3-1 away win at a West Ham side that are already looking doomed. A close Game then but a good one as both sides try to play good passing football.

Result Prediction: Bolton to win
Score Prediction: Bolton 2 Birmingham 1
Attendance Prediction: 21,000

Match 9: Liverpool – WBA: (Sunday August 29th: 3pm):

Liverpool need a league victory after losing 3-0 at Manchester City on Monday night (as I predicted, ha). They won in Europe away on Thursday 2-1 to go through in the UEFA Cup but they are still not looking the full package. They are stuck on one point as they could only draw 1-1 with Arsenal on the opening day. They should win this game as they are playing a West Brom side who managed a 1-0 victory over Sunderland last Saturday after being thrashed 6-0 by Chelsea on the opening day. Despite Liverpool being really bad last season they were still good at beating the lesser lights of the Premiership at home. So a Liverpool win & will WBA manage to stay up this time in the Premiership? They have some hope as West Ham seem determined to do a Portsmouth & come bottom.

Result Prediction: Liverpool to win
Score Prediction: Liverpool 3 WBA 0
Attendance Prediction: 44,000

Match 10: Sunderland – Manchester City: (Sunday August 29th: 3pm):

Last season in this fixture Manchester City were lucky to come away with a point in a 1-1 draw. This time I think they will get all three points against a Sunderland side who don’t appear to have improved from last season. Sunderland lost 1-0 at WBA last Saturday which was a bad defeat for them as West Brom will be expected to struggle this season. Sunderland should after this game find themselves in the relegation places after defeat which will not go down well. Plenty of the season left for them however to improve which I expect them to do. Manchester City unlike Aston Villa won in Europe 2-0 to qualify for the next stage. They also had a great 3-0 win against Liverpool in their last league game which proved how far Liverpool & City are apart. An away win then & city’s Italian manager will be in a good mood, mainly because his continued employment will mean more scarf’s for his collection.

Result Prediction: Manchester City to win
Score Prediction: Sunderland 1 Manchester City 3
Attendance Prediction: 41,000

That’s all for this week everybody.
See you all early next week.

Best Correct Prediction(s) of the week:

“Liverpool winning by the correct score of 3-0 against Aston Villa as well as Blackburn beating Wolves to bounce back from their thrashing at Manchester United, also Sunderland extending their unbeaten home record against a West Ham side who had won their last two games”

Hello everyone & welcome to week 16 on the Premiership. Another correct scoreline last week, Liverpool beating Aston Villa 3-0. This was my 14th in the Premiership so far this season which is much better than this stage last season & at this rate I should overtake last seasons overall total around February. My correct results have also started to pick up as well with 6 out of 9 (Blackpool – Manchester united fell foul of the weather) for the weekend just gone. The correct results were Liverpool beating Aston Villa, Sunderland beating West Ham, Blackburn beating Wolves, Arsenal beating Fulham, West Brom winning against Newcastle & Manchester City beating Bolton to end their drawing sequence at home.

I also kept up me good rate in the Champions League on Tuesday/Wednesday with 3 out of 5 correct results & my first correct scoreline of the season with Arsenal winning 3-1 as I said they would. I was also pleased in my prediction of Spurs drawing away & Chelsea losing to Marseille proving to be correct. This means that out of a total of 28 games in the Champions League I have predicted 19 correct in terms of the result. UEFA take note as it seems that the Champions League is less competitive than the Premiership, at least for this season…

Please take a look at My championship predictions which are going well as well. Last weekend I gained 4 out of 7 in correct results which means I have now predicted 32 out of 67 games correct as well as 6 correct scorelines in only 6 articles.

Enough of the idle backslapping. Onwards & upwards…

See you all next week for the final weekend before the holiday fixtures…

Match 1: Aston Villa – West Brom: (Saturday December 11th: 3pm):

Villa are in freefall having lost again, this time very easily at Liverpool by the scoreline of 3-0. They have now gone 5 games without a win since they beat Blackpool 3-2 on November 10th. They have gained only one point since then (2-2 with Manchester United) & have lost their last three as well as being knocked out of the League Cup 2-1 by their deadliest rivals Birmingham City. Good start for the new manager Gerrard Houiller who I must admit was a surprise choice for me as manager. I thought apart from his first season at Liverpool where they won 3 cup’s that he was crap & seemed unable to change the playing style when other sides learnt how to play his Liverpool team.

Villa now play a West Brom side who have picked up again after a bad run & have won their last two games, 4-1 at Everton & a very easy 3-1 against Newcastle last Sunday that has lifted them back up the table to 9th place. This is in contrast to Villa who lie in 16th place just two points above the relegation places.

Villa lost their unbeaten home record in their last home game when they went down to Arsenal 4-2 & I can see them losing again to give West Brom their third away win of the season after wins at Arsenal & Everton as well as draws at Manchester United & West Ham.

An away win then & my money is on Villa’s manager not lasting the season.

Match prediction: West Brom to win
Score Prediction: Aston Villa 1 West Brom 2
Attendance Prediction: 39,000

Match 2: Everton – Wigan: (Saturday December 11th: 3pm):

Everton recovered from the shock 4-1 home defeat to West Brom by getting a great point at Chelsea in a 1-1 draw. They deserved this point & it was the second successive season that they have come away from Stamford Bridge undefeated. They now face bottom three side Wigan in a game they have to win to improve their position in the table as well as their home form which is a bit average at present. Apart from wins against Liverpool (how they must have enjoyed that win) & Stoke they have drawn with Bolton & Wolves and lost to West Brom, Arsenal & Newcastle. Room for improvement especially as their away form is good.

Wigan are one of my tips for relegation & at present they are not letting me down. They managed a home draw with Stoke last Saturday but are still in the bottom three all be it on goal difference. They lost their last away game at West Ham 3-1 to go with other away defeats at Manchester United, Blackburn & Fulham. Their only away win so far was the surprise 1-0 at Spurs & no I don’t know how they won there either especially when you consider that they lost at Spurs 9-1 last season.

A home win then & Everton moving up from 15th in the table. Wigan I am afraid are only going in one direction.

Match prediction: An Everton win
Score Prediction: Everton 2 Wigan 0
Attendance Prediction: 36,000

Match 3: Fulham – Sunderland: (Saturday December 11th: 3pm):

Fulham lost again last Saturday but no big surprise as it was at Arsenal. Fulham are still just outside the relegation area but they need a win & quickly. So, what better side to play than Sunderland who apart from the win at Chelsea have yet add to that win. They (Sunderland) lost again away, this time at Wolves in their last away game. It is Sunderland’s home form that is their winning hand as they are unbeaten this season which continued with the 1-0 win against West Ham last Sunday.

To be fair Sunderland have drawn at Liverpool, Wigan & Blackburn but have lost at Newcastle, West Brom & Wolves.

All of Fulham’s wins this season have come at home against Wigan, Wolves . Yes, that’s right only two wins. Not good. The problem as I have said before is that they are drawing too many games as proved by the home draws against Birmingham, Aston Villa, Manchester United & Everton. Last season they would have won at least a couple of those drawn games & hence they would be higher up the table.

So Fulham need a win & I think they will get it against a travel shy Sunderland but I suspect it might be close.

Match prediction: A Fulham win
Score Prediction: Fulham 2 Sunderland 1
Attendance Prediction: 25,000

Match 4: Stoke – Blackpool: (Saturday December 11th: 3pm):

Stoke drew at Wigan 2-2 last Saturday to keep up their unbeaten run. They are now 5 games unbeaten which includes 3 wins & two draws. They are in 10th position which is more or less where I think they will finish come the end of the season. These are good days for Stoke as they haven’t enjoyed this good a run in the top flight since the early 1980’s (I think).

They now face Blackpool who are doing a lot better so far than me & a lot of other people expected. Blackpool have Three times away & twice at home which coupled with their draws at West Ham & Bolton & at home to Fulham & Everton leaves them more or less in midtable (13th). There is still a long way to go however for Blackpool & they will forever looking over their shoulder to see that the gap between them and the bottom three clubs is not closed.

I think that Stokes’ recent good run will make them favourites for this game. Blackpool may have won at Newcastle, Liverpool & Wigan but they have lost at Aston Villa, Birmingham, Arsenal &Chelsea. An away defeat for the seaside’s then but it will be a close game.

Match prediction: Stoke to win
Score Prediction: Stoke 2 Blackpool 1
Attendance Prediction: 41,000

Match 5: West Ham – Manchester City: (Saturday December 11th: 3pm):

West Ham’s recent mini revival came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland. They now face a very tough game against Manchester City who are in a good run of form having beaten Bolton at home last Saturday to make it 7 games unbeaten in the Premiership & Europe. City have won their two of their last three away games at West Brom & Fulham preceded the draw at Stoke a couple of weeks ago. City have also won this season at Blackpool & Wigan. They have also drawn at Spurs. So a reasonable away record that has seen only two defeats at Wolves & Sunderland.

I can’t see West Ham winning this as they have only won two games all season, both at home to Spurs & last time out to Wigan. They have lost to Chelsea, Newcastle & Bolton already at home. Add to that Manchester City I feel & despite a League Cup semi final appearance I feel that West ham are going to go down. A shame as their fans deserve better.

Match prediction: Manchester City to win
Score Prediction: West Ham 1 Manchester City 3
Attendance Prediction: 37,000

Match 6: Newcastle – Liverpool: (Saturday December 11th: 5.30pm):

Yet more madness at Newcastle where their wonderful chairman has sacked their manager Chris Houghton. This is crazy as he had brought them back to the premiership at the first time of asking in style last season & this season they have done much better than most people expected with some great wins, most notably against Sunderland, Aston Villa & of course the great away win at Arsenal.

They now face with their new manager Alan Liverpool who are crap away from home. Newcastle are not very good at home this season as proved by defeats to Blackburn, Blackpool & Stoke. They could also only draw with Fulham & Wigan but to be fair a draw with Chelsea in their last home game was a good point.

Liverpool have only won once away from home so far & that was at Bolton but apart from a draw at Birmingham & Wigan they have lost the rest. Appalling. The defeats in all their glory have been at Stoke, Spurs, Everton, Manchester City & Manchester United.

Defeat number 6 on the road for Liverpool methinks & a welcome home win for Newcastle especially as I can’t remember the last time they beat Liverpool in any game.

Match prediction: a Newcastle win
Score Prediction: Newcastle 2 Liverpool 0
Attendance Prediction: 45,000

Match 7: Bolton – Blackburn: (Sunday December 12th: 1.30pm):

Bolton despite their narrow defeat as predicted by yours truly last Saturday at Manchester City are still having a great season. They are 6th in the table just three points behind Spurs in 5th. Bolton’s home form this season has seen only one defeat to Liverpool & wins over Newcastle, Stoke & impressively Spurs. They have drawn with Blackpool (last home game), Birmingham, Manchester United & Fulham. So a good home form then.

They now face a Blackburn side who are more or less doing what they did last season, i.e., a strong home record against poor away form. To be fair to Blackburn they have managed wins at Newcastle & Blackpool but they have suffered defeats at Manchester United (7-1), Liverpool, Birmingham & Stoke.

Bolton should win this as I really can’t see them losing two games on the trot especially the way they are playing this season, witness the 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle a few weeks ago.

Match prediction: A Bolton win
Score Prediction: Bolton 3 Blackburn 1
Attendance Prediction: 25,000

Match 8: Wolves – Birmingham: (Sunday December 12th: 1.30pm):

Wolves won their last home game 3-2 against Sunderland but undone the positives of that result by losing at Blackburn last Saturday 3-0 as I predicted. If Wolves are to survive they will have to keep on winning at home & hope for better fortune on the road where they have collected only one point so far which is of course relegation form.

Wolves have won three games all season & all of them at home obviously. Apart from Sunderland they have beaten Stoke & Manchester City. Last season they lost this fixture 1-0 so they will be hoping for better luck this time around.

Birmingham’s home form is again this season holding up really well but they are drawing too many games which is the problem away as well where they have failed to win but have drawn at Sunderland, Bolton, Fulham, Aston Villa & Manchester City. Their only defeats coming at Arsenal, West Brom & Stoke. I feel that if they could get an away win it would really kick start their season as they are in the League cup semi finals anyway & so one step away from Wembley. They face West Ham in a two leg semi final & will be hopeful of reaching the final where they should play Arsenal as they face struggling Championship side Ipswich town.

I think that Wolves will just win this game but it will be close.

Match prediction: A Wolves win
Score Prediction: Wolves 2 Birmingham 1
Attendance Prediction: 27,000

Match 9: Tottenham – Chelsea : (Sunday December 12th: 4pm):

This is a good game to preview. Chelsea seem to have shot their bolt so to speak. They lost again on Wednesday when they lost away at Marseille in the Champions League. I admit that the game was a dead rubber as far as they were concerned but because of their recent bad run they didn’t need to lose.

Chelsea have now slipped from top of the table a month ago to 3rd behind Arsenal top & Manchester United second. I can’t see them on this run reaching top again or unless the manager spends some money being top for a long time to come.

Chelsea have now only won once (against Fulham 1-0) since they lost at Liverpool 2-0 in early November. Very bad form. Spurs meanwhile are having a good season & they carried on by gaining a very good point at Birmingham last Saturday in a 1-1 draw even though Birmingham scored late in the game. Bigger sides have lost at Birmingham this past year or failed to win.

Spurs are 5th in the table & their last game produced a 2-1 win against the not so mighty Liverpool when they came from behind to win despite missing a penalty. Such is Liverpool’s decline it was not considered a shock result.

A home win then but the big game is on Monday night between Arsenal & Manchester United which is where we go next.

Match Prediction: Tottenham to win
Score Prediction: Spurs 2 Chelsea 1
Attendance prediction: 36,000

Match 10: Manchester United – Arsenal: (Monday December 13h: 8pm):

This is the one. First versus second & with Chelsea in decline this game takes on even more importance than previous seasons. You have the team with the best home record against the team with the best away record. Something has to give & I think it will.

My only concern is that the referee will not influence proceedings like previous seasons towards the home side. Arsenal have so far won at Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton, Wolves & Blackburn while they have drawn at Liverpool & Sunderland. Their only defeat was against Chelsea. Methinks if they played Chelsea now they would win.

United have only dropped points in one home game so far & that was against West Brom when they drew 2-2 after being 2-0 up at half time. Apart from that it has been wins over Wolves, Newcastle, Blackburn, Wigan, Liverpool, Tottenham & West Ham.

So why do I think that Arsenal can break Manchester United at home in this game? Just a hunch I’m afraid.

Match Prediction: Arsenal to win
Score Prediction: Manchester United 1 Arsenal 2
Attendance Prediction: 75,000

That’s all for this week everybody.

See you next Thursday for the last premiership games before Christmas
