The goalkeeper is the person who has to single handedly deal with the area between the posts during a football game. The goalkeeper is responsible for preventing goals scored by the opposing team. If a goalkeeper doesn’t do his job well, a team can’t win any game. Often, a goalkeeper is called a goalie and in many matches, the goalies become responsible for the game wins.

Goalkeepers of all teams have a number 1 shirt and fans of the goalkeeper will want their England football shirts with number 1 printed on them . Goalkeepers are worshiped by their fans by wearing shirts that represent their favourite player. Even though goalkeepers are often called as number 1 for the team, players can choose their own favorite t shirt numbers and many famous players have distinct numbers like 99 on their shirt to differentiate them from the rest of the players.

Goalie worshiping is not something new for England players as the team has won excellent matches in the past. Many famous players continued good spells on the field and participated in every major game. There are a few football shirts , dedicated to idols that are still popular even if the era of the hero keeper has passed.

David Seaman is England’s second most capped player with 75 caps. He has played in four major Euro and World Cup tournaments, making his mark in every game. Seaman’s best game was during the Euro 96 tournament in which his saves led to the team beating Scotland. He made over 1000 career appearances, playing for various English teams.

Peter Shilton is undeniably one of the best English goalkeepers and he is the most capped player in the world. In his career, he obtained a total of 125 caps . Starting as a budding goalie in 1970, he had a great career for thirty years. A spectacular season earned a spot for him in the Euro 1980 championship game. He continued to be a man in the limelight and later he was beaten by Diego Maradona in 1986 World Cup. Peter made his appearance on the field for about 1000 games.

Ray Clemence is a man who showed exceptional talents and won 61 caps for England. He competed with Peter Shilton for the number 1 Jersey and he received his position in rotation with Shilton. Before the end of his career, he captained England once during a friendly match against Brazil and he was the second goalkeeper to earn this pride after Frank Swift.

People who watched football games can never forget Gordon Banks as he was the second best goalkeeper in the world during the 20^th century. During his football career, the England team made several wins and he earned 73 caps for England. England football shirts with pictures of Gordon Banks are still favourites among football fans. Banks’s career was ended due to an unfortunate accident that caused loss of sight in his right eye.

Chris Woods gained popularity as England’s goalkeeper in a short period of eight years. In the early 1990s, he was recognized as England’s number 1. Even though his international debut started as a member of the squad for the 1986 World Cup, he played only at the Euro 92 game and his last tournament was the 1993 summer tour.

“You’ve go to be kidding?” I asked “That was a definite dive!”, but the referee was having none of it and duly awarded a penalty. These things happen as part and parcel of the game but when it’s on your debut for a club that’s just made you their highest paid player the timing could have been better it’s got to be said! I remonstrated long enough to annoy the penalty taker and somehow still managed to avoid a yellow. It was a penalty, that I couldn’t deny, but the fact that it was totally my causing made it worse. A routine through ball which required a basic sliding gather of the ball saw me bring my knees in to protect me far too early and the ball bounced off my knees and into the path of the onrushing striker. Panic always sets in then as you have just a split second to attack the ball again, except that I didn’t, I chose to go straight for his legs as he’d just drawn level with me and I was still on the floor. I managed to get enough traction to push myself into his path and outstretched my arm to successfully deny him an open goal. Quite how I never received a card for it I’ll never know but I was always lucky with referees in that regards. I’ve always tried to treat the referees with huge respect as I could never do that job and I hope that the fact that I caused them relatively few headaches during my career helped to appease them a little in situations such as these. My mistake, sorry boys, but now it’s up to me to do something about it.

I’ve always had a relatively high success rate against penalties, certainly managing to predict the right way even if the pace beat me, and again I fancied my chances. As a goalkeeper I was a natural loner and this situation always suited me to a tee…….me against them. I eyeballed the striker and watched his body language; I was diving to my right. At what height he hit the ball was then down to pure chance but I knew that I was playing the percentages in my favour and all I had to do was get in the way. With the eyes of my new teammates piercing the tension, not to mention the sub keeper in the dugout who’s place I’d pinched upon my arrival at the club; I knew I was under pressure. The striker placed the ball after I’d eventually given it back to him and started to pace out his run up. I was in no doubt which side he was shooting and as he struck the ball I took my initial step into the dive. BOOM! The ball cannoned off my knee, in fact the same knee as earlier, and rebounded to the relative safety of their full back on the touchline where he was dispossessed by our striker with a well timed sliding tackle. It is always a buzz when your team mates crowd round for the obligatory high fives and pats on the back, but even more so when you’ve just clawed yourself out the hole in which you dropped yourself in the first place. We subsequently went on to win the game 2-0 and as a direct result topped the table of which we would eventually finish second after a long arduous season.

That has always been my way in life and, like everyone, I naturally moan and whinge in the vain hope that someone will listen but eventually I will have a go to rectify it myself. The gaffer was a top man and had no qualms in allowing us to train separately from the lads, although there was the inevitable banter when they were doing their circuits and fitness work and we were still working with a football. Looking back on it now, those early sessions were formative of my coaching ethos I’ve adopted now – every session shall include a football from start to finish.

Defending World Cup champ Italy was heavily preferred on Sunday in World Cup gambling at the sportsbook as they faced New Zealand. 

It was an early start on Sunday for this match that was broadcast on ESPN. Italy was laying a goal and a half in World Cup betting probabilities to New Zealand.

It seemed as though Italy should be in danger without their primary goaltender, but it was also as achievable that it was a great thing. Federico Marchetti could be a better answer for Italy, and he’s the backup. He has been outstanding for Cagliari in Series A the past two seasons. Buffon is deemed a world class goalie but he did not perform that well this season for Juventus as he was in and out from the roster as a result of injury. Buffon is the starter for Italy due to his reputation and previous play not based on what he has carried out this year. The Italians may actually be better off with Marchetti as goalkeeper.

Winston Reid gave New Zealand a goal in stoppage time that empowered them to get a draw versus Slovakia. It looked unlikely they would find a method to score vs Italy and they could have easily allowed two or 3 goals. Italy is not as strong as they were four years ago but then New Zealand isn’t a fantastic squad and they were lucky to get a draw against Slovakia vs the World Cup wagering probabilities.

So when New Zealand in fact held reigning champions Italy to a tie on Sunday, it was thought to be a major upset. New Zealand only requires a win vs Paraguay on Thursday in order to progress to the round of 16 due to the fact of the final score, 1-1.

New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert has declared that the roster for the New Zealand squad is going to be the same as it was in their match against Italy. After all, if the team worked well vs Italy, who are 1 of the favorites to win the World Cup, chances are they will work well versus Paraguay as well. Herbert has applauded his squad for their amazing strength.

A year ago was the only time that New Zealand and Italy have met previously, and Italy won that competition 4-3. Italy has failed in only 1 of their previous 21 games against non-European teams and New Zealand didn’t seem to have the capacity to endanger the Italians in this Sunday game.

Hello everyone. Last weekend I managed again only 4 out of 10 in correct results but I did have the added bonus of the correct score of Chelsea winning at West Ham 3-1. That was my second correct score on the trot. It has been a very odd start to the season as proved by Everton who managed to score two very late goals to deny Manchester United three points as well as Blackburn somehow holding Manchester City at home despite their dreadful away record. Birmingham should have beaten Liverpool at home but Liverpool’s goalkeeper denied them with a man of the match performance. This all sounds like excuse’s. To be honest they are.

You have bad runs & good runs in football predicting & hopefully my average can rise from 40% so far this season to last season’s 57%.

A quick note regarding the Champions League where I got 2 out of 4 in correct results with both Arsenal & Chelsea doing me proud but how the hell Rangers managed a draw at Manchester United I won’t ever know. Spurs did much better than I thought as a very difficult away game for them ended in a 2-2 draw after I said they would lose. They were however 2-0 up just before half time & might regret throwing away that two nil lead.

The correct results in the Premiership for last Saturday were Arsenal beating Bolton, Fulham beating Wolves, Chelsea beating West Ham & Stoke beating Aston Villa.

Lets hope we get back to normal service this weekend.

Match 1: Stoke City – West Ham: (Saturday September 18th: 12.45pm):

Stoke got a much needed win against Aston Villa on Monday with a 2-1 win. Their last minute winner lifted them up the table above West Ham & Everton but still in the bottom three. Early days though so probably no need to worry for Stoke fans. That is not the case for West Ham fans I fear as they are looking like relegation fodder already. They lost their 4th game on the trot at home to Chelsea on Saturday. They are obviously bottom. Last season Stoke got the double over West Ham with a 1-0 win at Upton Park & a 2-1 win at home.

Same result in this game I feel. Stoke’s confidence will be much improved after their Monday night victory & West Ham the opposite. I am afraid to say that I think that West Ham are going to go down unless they change their manager. This is a shame us their fan base as already mentioned in previous articles deserves better. A home win then & Stoke should be out of the relegation places at 5pm, not so West Ham.

Match 2: Aston Villa – Bolton: (Saturday September 18th: 3pm):

Aston Villa have started the season average at best. They have managed to win both their home games beating West Ham 3-0 & Everton 1-0 but away they have yet to gain a point being thrashed at Newcastle 6-0 & on Monday losing 2-1 at Stoke despite leading 1-0 & conceding a last minute goal. They have been knocked out of Europe already & so there is a certain amount of doom around Villa Park. Will their new manager be able to turn things around against a Bolton side who have started well. Bolton won at West Ham 3-1 & have drawn at home with Birmingham & Fulham. The one blot on their record so far has been their 4-1 defeat at Arsenal last Saturday where to be fair they played well until they had very unfairly in my point of view a player sent off when the score was 2-1.

I think that Villa will win this game but it won’t be a great game as Bolton will make it very close. A narrow home win then but the victory won’t do much for Villa’s season as I feel that without Martin O’Neil they will come midtable & challenge very little in the cups.

What a dreadful decision to allow Martin O’Neil to leave.

Match 3: Blackburn – Fulham: (Saturday September 18th: 3pm):

First of all I must heap praise on Blackburn for lowering the admission price to £10 for this game in order to raise the gate. If only other clubs could follow Blackburn’s lead.

Blackburn gained a very good point away at Manchester City last Saturday in a 1-1 draw. They lost their last home game 2-1 to Arsenal (As I Predicted) but I think they will win this game against a Fulham side who have started the season well & are unbeaten so far. They beat Wolves at home last Saturday to go along with their three draws at home to Manchester United & away at Blackpool & Birmingham.

Fulham are proving harder to beat away from home this season proved by their 2 away draws so far. I fear that that unbeaten record will end in this fixture. Blackburn are strong at home & won this fixture last season. A repeat is on the cards methinks.

A home win then in front of a large crowd but not in the away end where Fulham’s usual 500 plus away following will at least benefit from reduced admission prices for their long trip up from London.

Match 4: Everton – Newcastle: (Saturday September 18th: 3pm):

Everton got their season up & running with a 3-3 draw at home to Manchester United. They may have only drawn but it was of course the way they drew by coming from 3-1 down with only a few minutes left on the clock. Well done lads.

They are second from bottom but should move up the table starting with a home win against Newcastle in this game. Newcastle somehow lost at home to newly promoted 2-0 on Saturday after beating Aston Villa 6-0 in their previous home game. Go figure. They drew their previous away game at Wolves 1-1 so have four points so far & I expect them to remain on four points come 5pm.

Obviously these sides didn’t play each other last season as Newcastle were in the Championship. Everton are a good side & really need to win this game to carry on from last Saturday & kick start their season. They do not want to repeat last season’s last bad start which cost them in the end.

A home win then & who knows where Everton are going to end come the end of the season but for Newcastle I feel it will be a season of mid table boredom.

Match 5: Tottenham – Wolves: (Saturday September 18th: 3pm):

Wolves lost their first game of the season last Saturday 2-1 at Fulham. Wolves should stay up this season & with more ease than last season. They have already beaten Stoke at home on the opening day & drawn with Newcastle & Everton away, both 1-1- draws.

Spurs had a reasonable 2-2 draw away at Werder Bremen on Tuesday but they were 2-0 up & so might feel a little disappointed with the final result. They are being a tad hard on themselves as it was a very difficult away game for them & one that most people including myself thought they would lose.

Prior to that they drew at WBA last Saturday 1-1 but their last home game proved to be a very bad result for them when they lost 1-0 at home to Wigan. This was a game they were expected to win & as is this game against Wolves.

Last season Wolves won this fixture & also the home game as well to achieve the double over Spurs. These two victory’s went along way to keeping Wolves up. I can’t see Spurs losing at Home to Wolves for the second season on the trot so I am going to go for a home win.

Match 6: WBA – Birmingham City: (Saturday September 18th: 3pm):

West Brom are unbeaten in their two home games. They beat travel shy Sunderland 1-0 & drew with Spurs last Saturday 1-1. Their away record is the opposite in that they have lost both to Chelsea (6-0) & Liverpool (1-0). Birmingham are also unbeaten but in both home & away games. Something has to give or maybe not. This game could easily end up a score draw, just like both of Birmingham’s other two away games, at Bolton & Sunderland which both ended 2-2.

I am going to go for a close 2-1 win to Birmingham but it should be a close game. These sides didn’t meet last season because obviously West Brom were in the Championship busy getting promoted behind Newcastle. They have played each other a lot over recent years either in the Championship or Premiership. If my memory serves me right, Birmingham won the last time they played at the Hawthorns but don’t quote me on that.

Birmingham will probably come higher than West Brom this season but the big question is if West Brom can stay up as they have been a classic Yo-Yo club in recent years apart from one season when they managed to stay up under Bryan Robson, still went down the following season though.

I think they will struggle again & that is why I am going to go for a Birmingham win.

Match 7: Sunderland – Arsenal: (Saturday September 18th: 3pm):

Sunderland are unbeaten at home beating Manchester City in their last home game 1-0 with a last minute penalty & a 2-2 draw with Birmingham on the opening day of the season. They managed a point at Lowly Wigan last Saturday & really should have won as Wigan’s goal to draw 1-1 came late on.

Arsenal followed up their 4-1 win over Bolton on Saturday by thrashing poor Braga from Portugal 6-0 in their opening champions League game. Of the so called “Big four” last season both Arsenal & Liverpool lost at Sunderland last season. Arsenal very rarely lose two seasons on the trot at the same venue so I think they will win this game but Sunderland will make it a tough game for them & don’t be surprised if Sunderland score first.

Sunderland will easily stay up this season mainly because of their home record but will they finish ahead of their great rivals Newcastle? Yep, they will I reckon.

An away win then to cement Arsenal’s second place in the table.

Match 8: Manchester United – Liverpool: (Sunday September 19th: 1.30pm):

Both sides have had indifferent starts to the season but United have yet to lose while of course Liverpool have. Liverpool’s defeat was at Manchester City 3-0. They managed to draw 0-0 at Birmingham last Sunday when their keeper was the main reason for the 0-0 result. This result means that Liverpool have managed only one win in their first four games & that was a 1-0 victory against WBA, a side who are expected to struggle this season to stay up.

Manchester united have dropped four points so far in their first 4 games, both of them away at Fulham & last Saturday at Everton when they were 3-1 up & drew 3-3. They should have been well out of sight before Everton somehow got their two late goals. They followed up that disappointing result by only drawing 0-0 at home with Glasgow Rangers in their first Champions League.

I suspect that someone is going to pay for these results & I feel it is going to be a very poor Liverpool side who are going to suffer. I also fear that it won’t be long before their manager wishes he had stayed at Fulham. A home win.

Match 9: Wigan – Manchester City: (Sunday September 19th: 3pm):

Manchester City are another team who have a mixed start to the season. This is not too much of a surprise if you have been following City a long time. They lost at Sunderland in their last away game & then could only draw at home with Blackburn last Saturday.

This means that they have only won one game so far this season & that was the very impressive 3-0 win against Liverpool, mind you the way Liverpool have been playing this season it has been proved to be not such a big result as was first thought.

Wigan managed a 1-1 draw with Sunderland last Saturday thanks to a late goal which salvaged them the point. City must get back to form sooner or later & this is a game that should help them achieve that aim.

An away win then & it is going to be a long hard season for Wigan as they battle to stay up. Last season they were successful but this season they might not be.

Match 10: Chelsea – Blackpool: (Sunday September 19th: 4pm):

Blackpool now have two wins under their belt thanks to a 2-0 win at Newcastle last Saturday. Along with the draw against Fulham at home & the win against Wigan on the opening day they now have 7 very vital points in their bid to stay up.

Their only defeat came at Arsenal when they were well beat 6-0. This was unfair on them as they had a player very harshly sent off early in the game. I still think they would have lost despite this sending off but not as heavily. They now play a Chelsea side who are firing on all cylinders. They have won all four Premiership games with a goal difference of plus 16. The only goal they have conceded was against West ham last Saturday when they won 3-1.

In the week they won their first Champions League game 4-1 away at MSK Zilina who were making their debut in the Champions League.

I don’t really have to go on about Chelsea’s home record, it is bloody great. Blackpool really don’t stand a chance but they should do better than they did at Arsenal.

All parents want their children to learn all the social skills required to belong in today’s society. They want their children to learn discipline, respect, sharing and the art of making new friends. Every parent also wants his or her children to grow up healthy and fit. So what’s the answer? The simplest solution to your problem is to become a soccer parent.

Soccer allows young children to develop social skills, have fun and stay fit all at the same time. What’s that? You don’t know anything about soccer!  Nevermind, listen up  .

Soccer is a game of two forty-five minute halves. Each team consists of eleven players that try and penetrate the opposing goals. Each team has a goalkeeper that protects the goals.  The goalkeeper has the authority to handle the ball with his hands  . The other ten players are designated positions depending on the coach’s  tactics .

A soccer team consists of a goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and strikers. The defenders station themselves in front of their goal and as the name suggests, protect and defend their goal and goalkeeper. The midfielders are the link between the defenders and the strikers. They operate in the middle of the park and conduct the pace and tempo of the game. They offer support to the defenders while supplying the service to the strikers.

The forwards also known as the strikers are given the job of scoring goals. These players make up the offensive side of the field. The striker’s predominately take the most shots and score the most goals. Most soccer parents want their child to be a striker because this position gets the most attention and recognition.

A referee controls the game with the assistance of two linesmen. Each team can have up to three substitutions during the course of the match.

The basic requirements of soccer are a pair of shorts, a top and a pair of legs that bend at the knees. The cost with playing soccer is minimal and there is no expensive equipment that needs to be purchased.

The question shouldn’t be whether you can afford to play soccer, but rather can you afford not to play.
