The English Premier League has often been synonymous with the clubs Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool – also known as the Big Four. These four clubs have often been identified as the best of English football since the top 20 teams broke off from the Football Association to form the English Premier League. The four of them have earned the right to be known as the biggest clubs in the country after consistently winning the top trophies in English football every season. However, that may be about to change in the near future.

The Premiership is now seeing new contenders for inclusion into the elite group with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur leading the queue. These two clubs are no strangers to great history and tradition but their record in securing silverware leaves something to be desired. But they are sleeping no more as rippling new financial muscle is starting to fill the club with deep pockets. These are used to build foundations upon which they can compete on level ground with the Big Four. It could be that Spurs and City may go on to break new records and become bigger than any of the Big Four. Gone are the days when they had to sell their best players to other clubs in order to remain afloat. Other star players are now in their sights as they attempt to buy their way to success as part of their plans.

The revolution in English football is best represented by Manchester City. From the time Sheikh Mansour became the club owner, not a transfer rumour that involves a top player goes by without having Manchester City named as one of the interested parties. Trying to become the most powerful club both domestically and in Europe is not just a passing fancy for the club from Eastlands. Their first full season with Mansour at the helm has already seen the club splurge on more than five major signings in the summer. The major footballing stars that were willing to join the City revolution included Carlos Tevez, Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure. While their financial futures may be secured upon signing on the dotted line, the attraction of being involved in an ambitious plan for City to win the Premier League and Champions League in the near future proved the biggest motivating factor.

While Spurs may not yet enjoy the wealth that their other rivals take for granted, they believe in spending to get the best players their money can afford. Tottenham Hotspur may not have the millions in pounds to attract every top player but they are proving to be a spotter of young talent. They also have a coach in Harry Redknapp who has a proven track record of moulding these young players into top stars on the world stage. Redknapp also relies on such an approach to build a team that shines on team unity and spirit without being threatened by egos. That continues to be their driving force as they emerge as City’s main challengers to a place amongst the English Premier League elite.

Fans who watch Premiership online live stream would have noted that the Big Four’s hold on the Premier League could cease sooner rather than later from the two clubs’ challenge. It has already started with Liverpool’s place in the Champions League now usurped by Spurs who were pushed all the way by City. With more improvements lined up in the off season, it is not difficult to predict that they will continue to get better, faster. They may even surpass the rest eventually. With debt continuing to plague members of the Big Four, it is in contrast to the decidedly better futures that await both Spurs and City.
