The first phase of Mexico’s World Cup roster selection is complete as Mexico manager Javier Aguirre released a list of 17 players who will make up a training camp beginning on April 12.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the inclusion of veteran ‘keeper Oscar Perez.

The starter in the 2002 World Cup, Perez was not called in for any of Mexico’s friendly matches in 2010 but incumbent starter Guillermo Ochoa has made a pair of goalkeeping blunders lately and perhaps led to Perez’s recall.

Not on the roster are players such as Braulio Luna, who had performed well in action for El Tri this year as well as fellow veteran Francisco Palencia, who was a part of qualifying late last year. Goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco and forward Aldo De Nigris, both of Monterrey, were also left off the roster.

Guadalajara were the most represented club as five players from el RebaƱo are on the list, including forwards Adolfo “Bofo” Bautista and Alberto Medina.

Players will be given a short vacation – from April 5-11 – before reporting to national team camp. Mexico will play three friendlies on American soil in May, and will use this roster for those games.

Roster

Goalkeepers: Guillermo Ochoa (America), Luis Ernesto Michel (Guadalajara), Oscar Perez (Jaguares).
