Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid 2-1 Result Score Goals 29/04/2010 Europa league semi-finals

Europa League semi-finals return matches Liverpool – Atletico Madrid 2-1 Thursday April 29th 2010, Anfield Road Liverpool, Despite a 2-1 loss at Anfield Road, Atletico Madrid reached the final of the UEFA Europa League Thursday. After 90 minutes the score was 1-0 for Liverpool, in the prolongation both team scored once, giving the advantage to Atletico on the away goal rule.

Just as last week in Madrid, it was Diego Forlan that made the difference for Atletico. The final will be played on May 12th in Hamburg against English side Fulham, that edged past Hamburger SV with 2-1, enough to reach the final after last week’s 0-0 in the Nordbank Arena.

Liverpool started the game against Atletico furiously, Benayoun missing a chance after only ten seconds of play and the Mersey side forcing three corners in the first two minutes. The twenty minute mark meant the end of Liverpool´s opening-storm, and Atletico was able to control the game a bit better, but in the 44th minute Aquilani scored the well deserved 1-0 for Liverpool.
In the second half play was more balanced and there were some chances for both teams. The score was a difficult one to handle for Liverpool, for Atletico Madrid scoring, meant Liverpool would have to score twice. The end of the game was reached with the same 1-0 on the scoring board as last week in Vicente Calderon, requiring a prolongation.

Liverpool took a 2-0 lead in the 95th minute with a goal by Benayoun, but it was Diego Forlan who put Atletico virtuallay in the the Hamburg final again with a spectacular goal in the 102nd minute. In the second half of the prolongation Liverpool looked exhausted and was not able to create any more chances.

It is Atletico´s first European Final since 1986, when they lost the Cup Winners Final against Dynamo Kiev. They also lost the 1974 European Cup Final to Bayern Munich, their only international trophy being the 1962 Cup Winners Cup.
