The 2009/10 was a second-rate one for Arsenal by the high standards that the fans have come to accept, but overall it was not a bad year. December was gritty, we had to grind out wins, not pretty, but it showed good spirit in the squad, and we got those results. Cesc Fabregas started coming into his own, scoring goal after goal after goal. Then game the tough run, four games – Villa (away), United (home), Chelsea (away), Liverpool (home). We needed about six points at least from those games to stay in contention, but we only got four, we had had injuries all season and they were starting to affect us, and our season started to flag.

Then came the moment that our season took a turn, Robin Van Persie had played in a meaningless friendly for his country, Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini took out Van Persie and his ankle. Persie was out for seven months.

When Barcelona came to the Emirates it was a great game  45 minutes of fantastic football, yet they still couldn’t score. Then, in the second half they scored two goals in quick succession. Arsenal had a half-fit Cesc and an injury ravaged side, Walcott equalised and we won a penalty in the last minute. Cesc, with a broken leg scored the penalty to make it 2-2. It marked the end of Aresenal’s season, with our best player out for the rest of the season with a broken leg, and Arshavin  out with a muscle injury. The chances of winning the Champions League or the Premiership disappeared.

Injuries, players that were not good enough and managerial faults… are all to blame for a disappointing season. A season that started so fantastically well had crashed in slow motion by the end of the season. A young team, hungry and ambitious had changed by the end. It is easy to forget everything that happened before the last six weeks of the season, but we had remained in touching distance with the eventual winners the whole team. Over the summer investment into the Arsenal squad looks certain. There has been progress over the past year and, should the core of this squad be improved by one or two decent signings, there is a good chance that Arsenal could overhaul the ageing Chelsea and Manchester United teams next season. It looks like the Dutch soccer team is not going to have to miss master striker Robben from Bayern Munich. With the domestic seasons now coming to an end it is truly the time to concentrate fully on the World Cup, which is now only a month away. It seems we have been looking forward to this for many years (well, four in total) and with just one month to go until the biggest sporting event in the world it is time to have a gamble on the World Cup if you haven’t had one already.

Now is the time to examine the best five bets at the World Cup. Many people who don’t normally bet will probably only be familiar with the outright world cup betting and also perhaps the World Cup Golden Boot betting but there are many other betting markets that offer better value and are easier to call than predicting the outright winners.

The best bet at the World Cup is in the Stage of elimination market, which involves betting on when any of the teams gets eliminated. The best bets will come on teams that you think are sure to get out of the group but probably aren’t good enough to get to the semi final, that leaves just the Second Round and Quarter Final for those teams to go out.

Paraguay look to be a strong and underestimated team going to the World Cup and they are better than Slovakia and New Zealand who are also in their group, any probably even Italy. If Paraguay win their World Cup group, which they are well capable of doing, they are likely to play either Cameroon or Denmark in the next round, this would offer a very winnable game.

In the Quarter Final things will be too tough for Paraguay and they are very likely to go out, and Paraguay leaving the World Cup at this stage is a great bet at around 7/2, the same sort of odds you would get on Spain winning the entire tournament.

We have seen France struggle through Euro 2008 two years ago and also in World Cup qualifying and they will struggle again in Group A, they are around the 11/4 mark to play just three games at the World Cup and that is a value bet.

We have already mentioned South Africa, they have a massive advantage playing at home, don’t forget that outsiders South Korea got to the semi finals at home in 2002. For some reason South Africa are the outsiders in Group A. They look sure to get more than their fair share of refereeing decisions go their way and it is hard to see them not qualifying, they may even win the group but it is best to play it safe and take the 9/4 on them to simply qualify.

South Africa are also the subject of the fifth best bet for the World Cup. The best African team betting has Ivory Coast as the favourites. They have a very tough group with Brazil and Portugal in there and should they beat Portugal to the second spot they will play Spain in the second round, that’s them out! Despite this fact they are evens with some bookies whilst South Africa are a best price of 16/1 despite the fact they could easily reach the quarter finals on home soil.
