Argentina has an impressive Soccer Worldcup portfolio.  Their only unsuccessful qualification was in 1970.  As a consequence of political reasons they decided not to participate in three Soccer Worldcups; but they have taken part in every Soccer Worldcup since 1974 and in 2002, they were eliminated for the first and only time, in the first round.

As the 1978 Argentina Worldcup and the 1986 FIFA Worldcup Mexico champions, La Albiceleste saw a string of challenging 2010 world soccer qualifying games.  However having foiled a number of issues, the Argentine soccer team are set on winning the World Football Cup 2010 for the first time in 24 years. Potentially this goal may well become a realism as coach, Diego Armando Maradona, has top caliber players in his squad (including several players accountable for the team’s quarter finals game at the Germany 2006 World Cup).

Soccer Worldcup Players Worthy of Recognition

The Argentina soccer team is home to one of the world’s greatest soccer players, Lionel Messi.  Thus it’s not surprising that they are relying strongly on him to guide them to triumph at the South Africa Worldcup 2010.

Providing support in midfield is their captain and motivating force, Javier Mascherano.  Let’s also not forget Juan Sebastian Veron, who not only has immense experience, but also has a point to prove after being condemned during Argentina’s poor performance at the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup.  Lionel Messi has played in 18 Soccer Worldcup matches and is therefore the player with the most appearances.  The top goal scorers are Sergio Agüero, Lionel Messi and Juan Román Riquelme (4).

Argentina’s Leadership

Diego Maradona was born in Lanus, Argentina on October 30, 1960 and is respected as one of the world’s greatest footballer’s, as well as Pelé of Brazil.  He’s now tasked with conveying his skill, experience and superiority as a player to the Soccer Worldcup team he now leads.

Maradona is recognized as a cutthroat, impulsive and no-fluff kind of man.  As a player, he was nothing short of incredible.  He climbed through the ranks with his sovereign moment being at Napoli in 1984.

However, in 1991 a constant drug addiction led him to a 15 month prohibition.  Later at the 1994 Soccer Worldcup he was kicked out as a result of positive testing for a banned substance.  As a product of his addiction problems he endured serious health issues in 2004 and 2007.

After a nine year break, it came as a shock when he was named as the successor to Alfio Basile, who was discharged due to unsatisfactory performance.  But, to date Maradona hasn’t performed much better, with rumblings of his replacement.  With South Africa Worldcup 2010 in the near future , he has some making up to do .

Argentina FIFA Soccer Worldcup Successes

  • Overall the Argentine soccer team has played four FIFA World Cup Finals. In 1978 they beat Netherlands and in 1986 Germany.  But they were defeated by Uruguay in 1930 and by Germany in 1990.
  • The South Africa Worldcup 2010 sees Argentina’s 20th Soccer Worldcup appearance and their tenth successive appearance.
  • Diego Maradona played in four successive finals between 1982 and 1994 and now leads the team to the South Africa Worldcup 2010 in his first role as a coach.
