Championship fixtures: Friday December 17th: 2010
Match 1: Doncaster – Middlesbrough (7.45pm):
Doncaster lost at Leicester last Saturday as I predicted but I didn’t think they would get hammered 5-1 & that despite taking the lead. Doncaster have now slipped to 16th in the table after a good start to the season. I don’t think they will be relegated but they need a win to halt the slide.
Middlesbrough managed a shock win against Cardiff on Saturday with a first half penalty being the only goal of the game. They have now pulled out of the relegation zone with that win. This is quite a difficult game to predict but I am going to go for a Middlesbrough win as last time they won at home they won away the next game at Scunthorpe 2-1.
Result Prediction: Middlesbrough to win
Score Prediction: Doncaster 1 Middlesbrough 2
Championship fixtures: Saturday December 18th: 2010
Match 2: Cardiff – Burnley: (3pm):
Cardiff have failed to win for four games now after they lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough last Saturday. They need to get back to winning ways as Swansea have closed the gap to just goal difference between them both. Thankfully for Cardiff QPR lost at home last Friday nigh so at least the gap between them was not increased.
Burnley seem to have shot their bolt under their manager who I suspect won’t be in his job much longer. Of course he should have never have been appointed in the first place & if Burnley want to get back upto the Premiership than they need to get rid of him & fast.
This is a game that Cardiff will win as I believe that their desire is greater than Burnley’s who have yet to win away this season. A home win.
Result Prediction: Cardiff to win
Score Prediction: Cardiff 2 Burnley 0
Match 3: Coventry – Norwich (3pm):
This should be a good game as both sides are having good seasons & are playing reasonable football. Coventry increased their unbeaten run to 4 games after they drew at Reading 0-0 last Saturday while Norwich lost their unbeaten record with a home defeat to Portsmouth.
Coventry are above Norwich by one place & one point in 5th place. I think that because Norwich lost last weekend that this will give Coventry a slight advantage & plus they are at home. Should be a good game though.
Result Prediction: Coventry to win
Score Prediction: Coventry 2 Norwich 1
Match 4: Derby – Reading: (3pm):
Derby have slipped a bit & another defeat away at Bristol City last Saturday has seen them slip to 7th, three points out of the playoff zone. They need a win as do their visitors reading who drew yet again last Saturday, this time at home to improved Coventry.
Reading are six points behind Derby in 14th place which proves that a good run can get you up the table in this division. I think that as both sides are struggling to win at the moment that this game will end in a high scoring draw which won’t please either set of fans that much but as we are only half way through the season there is no need for panic yet.
Result Prediction: A Score draw
Score Prediction: Derby 2 Reading 2
Match 5: Hull – Bristol City (3pm):
Hull gained a useful away point at relegation threatened Crystal Palace last Saturday in a 0-0 draw. It leaves Hull in 19th place just outside the relegation places & to say that hull are having a bad season is an understatement.
Hull now face inform Bristol City who won again last Saturday when they beat Derby 2-0. It is no wonder that there manager won manager of the month as they have moved out of the relegation places to the safety of 17th place, three points above Hull.
Bristol city’s only defeat in this great run they are on was a 3-1 defeat at Leeds united. They have won their last two home games against Derby & Sheffield Utd without conceding a goal. An away win then.
Result Prediction: A Bristol City win
Score Prediction: Hull City 1 Bristol City 2
Match 6: Leeds – QPR: (3pm):
Leeds are on a great run as was proved by them winning at Burnley last Saturday when they came from 2-0 down at half time to win 3-2. Leeds’s recent good run has seen them move up the table into 4th place.
They now face a QPR side who are top of the table but lost their unbeaten start to the season record by finally losing last Friday against Watford of all teams at home. Watford’s win was no fluke either as they were three nil up before rangers scored the last goal of the game.
I think this game will be a close one but Leeds will just edge it as they seem to have some momentum going at present.
Result Prediction: Leeds to win
Score Prediction: Leeds 2 QPR 1
Match 7: Millwall – Barnsley: (3pm):
Millwall got a very good point away at Swansea last Friday night in a 1-1 scoreline. They will hope to repeat their last home result when they beat Scunthorpe 3-0. I don’t think they will repeat the scoreline but they should still win.
Barnsley are doing ok like Millwall. Barnsley beat their near neighbours Sheffield United last Saturday 1-0 as I predicted. Barnsley will finish in midtable this season which will please them I suspect. The same goes for Millwall. One final note regarding Millwall. I do strongly believe that their old ground “The Den” should have been preserved as it was a classic ground. It was intimidating, scary, warm & loads of atmosphere all rolled into one. I was lucky enough to have visited it for a game & may the mists of time forget how it & other terraced grounds were like in the 1980/90’s. The Den R.I.P.
Result Prediction: Millwall to win
Score Prediction: Millwall 2 Barnsley 0
Match 8: Nottingham Forest – Crystal Palace: (3pm):
Forest will be a bit frustrated as their last two games have been postponed due to the weather. As a consequence Forest have lost a bit of momentum & have dropped to 15th. They are still however only six points away from the play off places. Such is the table in the Championship this season.
Forest now play Crystal Palace who are still in the bottom three after last Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Hull city. It is palace’s away form that is of the most concern as they have lost 4 of their last 5 away games, the latest one being a 2-1 defeat at Leeds.
Forest to win then as they were on a good run anyway before their enforced break.
Result Prediction: A Forest win
Score Prediction: Nottingham Forest 2 Crystal Palace 1
Match 9: Portsmouth – Scunthorpe: (3pm):
Portsmouth won again away last Saturday with a 2-0 win at inform Norwich. This followed up their win at Swansea the previous week. So two great away wins to take Portsmouth upto 12th. Portsmouth should take their run further with this home fixture against a struggling Scunthorpe side who haven’t won since a 1-0 win at Hull on the 6th November. As a consequence of this run Scunthorpe have dropped to second from bottom in the table.
Portsmouth may have lost their last home game 3-2 against Doncaster but I can’t see them losing this game & therefore winning their 5th home game of the season.
Scunthorpe are looking more & more like they are going to go down & I fully expect Portsmouth to add to their woes with victory in this game.
Result Prediction: Portsmouth to win
Score Prediction: Portsmouth 3 Scunthorpe 1
Match 10: Sheffield United – Swansea: (3pm):
Sheffield United manager Gary Speed left his post in midweek to take over the Wales International job. God help Wales is all I can say. United have really struggled this season under Speed’s brief spell & lost for the second successive time away last Saturday when they lost at Barnsley 1-0. This followed up their 3-0 defeat at Bristol City.
As a consequence of these two defeats United have dropped to 20th place in the table only 1 point above the drop zone. Hard times at the “Lane”. They now play Swansea who closed the gap on Cardiff to goal difference despite only drawing with Millwall at home. Swansea are third then.
Swansea’s away form is good & they won 3-1 at Ipswich in their last away game. Another three points on their travels then for Swansea.
Result Prediction: Swansea to win
Score Prediction: Sheffield United 1 Swansea 2
Match 11: Watford – Preston: (3pm):
Watford became the first side to beat QPR this season with a great 3-1 win at Loftus Road. They deserved it as well as QPR’s manager acknowledged after the game. This was a great result for Watford as they had beaten an improved Leicester side 3-2 the week before.
Watford are now unbeaten in four games & I suspect that they will be confident of winning this game against bottom side Preston. Watford have now moved upto 8th in the table with this run.
Preston managed to beat out of form Ipswich 1-0 last Saturday as I predicted to gain their first win since the titanic sunk…Preston are still bottom but now only two points adrift of safety.
A home win then & I don’t think that Preston will survive this season in the Championship.
Result Prediction: A Watford win
Score Prediction: Watford 3 Preston 1
Match 12: Ipswich – Leicester: (5.20pm):
Leicester are slowly climbing the table since the arrival of their former England Manager. They continued their improvement with a 5-1 win against Doncaster last Saturday despite going 1-0 down in the first half. Leicester are now upto 13th place & only 5 points behind a playoff place. Leicester lost their last away game at Watford 3-2 but I can’t see them losing this game as Ipswich are on a dreadful run.
Ipswich have now lost their last six games & have dropped to 18th place, just three points above the bottom three. Ipswich are in a relegation battle. How their manager has survived I am not too sure.
I think that Leicester will win this game to keep up their rate of improvement but it could spell the end of the Roy Keane era.
Result Prediction: Leicester to win
Score Prediction: Ipswich 1 Leicester 2
