The 2010 Premiership football season wasn’t exactly a great one but at least it had excitement down to the final game with some uncertainty about whether Cheslea or Manchester United would finally triumph. Congratulations then to Chelsea football club, who have emerged as rightful Champions, with 27 wins, 86 points, and 103 goals in the bank.
Chelsea eventually came to win after providing some of the seasons main highlights. They put seven goals each past Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke City, and finished the seasons with an 8-0 thrashing of Wigan Athletic. Carlo Ancelotti’s men secured a title which was thoroughly deserved but was not won convincingly. Along the way, Chelsea were able to afford six defeats. Manchester United, in second place, suffered seven. It is said of English football that on the day any team can beat any other, this season that was true.
For Chelsea, John Terry did little to enhance his reputation on or off the pitch, but a enough players further up the field were unswervingly reliable. Frank Lampard, Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba had good seasons, almost always present on the scoresheet. Lampard in particular was brilliant, even if he doesn’t shout about it so much these days. Chelsea had ability and coolness under pressure, the fact that they were able to slip up all too often and yet still win the league shows that their rivals aren’t quite in their league.
Chelsea’s main challenge came from Manchester United, a declining force compared to their dominance a few years ago. United had lost Ronaldo, Tevez, and the attacking zest that had brought them three consecutive titles. An over-reliance on Rooney was supported with admirable gusto by Wayne, but the rest of the team wasn’t up to it. Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are getting old and won’t be around for much longer. There is a team rebuilding effort to be done at Old Trafford. Can Alex Ferguson build it again or is it time for a new manager?
Before the season began, many pundits were tipping Liverpool for the title. As it happened, they weren’t even involved in the battle – their opening day defeat at Spurs was indicative of how their season would progress. Liverpool quickly fell away, losing matches far too easily and dropping points in games they would, back in August, have been expected to win. The support for Rafael Benitez by a large portion of Liverpool’s fans is strange, as the Spaniard has failed spectacularly this season.
Arsenal improved a lot this season and took their title challenge further than many had predicted. Arsene Wenger’s young players are starting to come into their own and the team as a whole seems stronger than in seasons past. This season represented progress for Arsenal. They offset the loss of Kolo Toure by bringing in Thomas Vermaelen, in midfield, Alex Song emerged as a top-class holding midfielder, whilst Cesc Fabregas overcame several injuries to have his best season so far, ending the year with 19 goals. Supporters will ask ‘what if Robin Van Persie wasn’t injury prone we hadn’t a decent backup goalkeeper ?’
Lower down, the race for fourth and a place in Europe offered excitement. In the end, it was Tottenham Hotspur who celebrated fourth like a league title win – Manchester City or Aston Villa would have been the same if they hadn’t just missed out.
Spurs triumphed when City fell foul of a late Peter Crouch header at Eastlands, but also because Tottenham faced Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City in the final weeks of the season and beat three of them in style.
The story at the bottom this season has been financial chaos at Portsmouth. Their ten-point penalty wasn’t the difference between survival and relegation mathematically, but their relegation reflects badly on everyone involved..
